BMX Bikes

BMX bikes were initially designed for racing. The term BMX bike is still used to describe race bikes, but also the ones intended for the street, park, dirt, flatland, and BMX freestyle disciplines of BMX. BMX bike frames are made of various materials like steel, aluminum, carbon, or chromoly, depending on their intended use.

Introducing different types of BMX bikes

BMX bike has a modest history starting as racing bike. With time and as it gained popularity, various types for various disciplines have stemmed, including BMX race, dirt, freestyle, street, park, and more.

  • Street BMX bikes are heavier and stronger because of the extra strain they face ridden on the street Nowadays street style BMX bikes come with synthetic sleeved pegs attached to the axles to enable the rider to grind or balance on various obstacles. To accommodate the spinning of the bars that the riders often do, street BMX bikes don’t have cable brakes, so the brake cables wouldn’t get caught. Instead, riders usually mount a u-brake to the rear or they simply step on the back tire to slow down.
  • Dirt BMX bikes have thicker tires that feature wider treads to facilitate better grip on unpaved surfaces.
  • Park or vert BMX bikes are not ridden on tough terrains, therefore, are made lighter. They come with or without brakes.
  • Flatland BMX bikes have unique riding requirements, they have to achieve very precise balancing and so the geometry of their frame is different from the traditional one.
  • Race BMX bikes are made of lighter materials, have a little bit of different frame geometry, and are required to have brakes. Sizes can differ. Their lightweight construction is an advantage when acceleration is concerned, but a disadvantage in performing street tricks.

BMX frames are generally made of steel or aluminum, with higher-end bikes made from chromoly. Nowadays it is actually the third-generation chromoly which has a much higher strength-to-weight ratio, perfect for BMX riding.

Adult BMX bikes roll with 20-inch tires usually, although the size can range up to 29 inches.

Most BMX bikes offer a 3-piece crankset, which means there are 3 crank arms and a spindle, while 2-piece cranks are of simpler setup, it doesn’t allow you to use spline drive sprockets, but the advantage is reduced weight.

When it comes to choosing the right BMX bike for you, you need to weigh up style, comfort, and performance so that you get the right BMX bike for your riding style.
