How to choose MTB frame

Mountain bike frames are made of a variety of materials, each one with its advantages and disadvantages. Let’s have a closer look at each:

  • Carbon fiber MTB frames are light and stiff, look modern, and high-quality, high-end performance, but come with a high price tag.
  • Aluminum MTB frames are also light and stiff yet more economical than carbon frames. For those who don’t mind a little more weight, it is a good alternative to a carbon frame.
  • Steel MTB frames offer plenty of pros. They offer comfortable and lively rides; they look good and can stay that way for a long time if taken good care of. They are the most affordable, but they are the heaviest of them all.
  • Titanium MTB frames are very similar in performance and look to the steel frames plus they are corrosion-resistant and quite lighter. These advantages come at a higher price though.

Other points of importance

  • The geometry of a frame is going to be defined by the type of riding you intend to do, so it will get longer as the ride gets more aggressive.
  • Suspension. You will need according to frames if you choose to build a full suspension mountain bike or a hardtail because they come with given specifications.
  • Wheel size is another feature to consider since they usually come in three sizes 26, 27.5 (650B), and most commonly 29 inches. Unless frames can accommodate different sizes you’ll be stuck with the wheel size for good.
